He received his BSc degree from the Department of Earth Sciences, Nanjing University in Feb. 1982, his MSc degree from the Institute of Geochemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) in December 1984, and worked in this institute afterwards. He went to Japan in May 1986, first as a visiting scholar in the Institute of Physical and Chemical Research (RIKEN), then as a PhD candidate in the Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Science, Tokyo University, later as a special researcher for basic sciences in RIKEN, Japan Science and Technology Agency, and finally as Associate Professor in the Department of Chemistry, University of Electro-Communications. He came back to China in October 1996. He is now Vice President of the National Natural Science Foundation of China. He was Director of the Institute of Geochemistry, CAS and served at the same time as Director of the State Key Laboratory of Environmental Geochemistry of this Institute from July 1997 to September 2009, and was President of Chinese Society for Mineralogy, Petrology and Geochemistry from 2004 to 2013. He is Vice Chairman of Guizhou Association for Science and Technology, and a member of the Chinese Geological Society and the Chinese Society for Environmental Sciences. He is also editorial board member of international and domestic journals such as Chemical Geology, Chinese Journal of Geochemistry etc.
